Abstract

The recent growth of traffic demand, combined with a modal distribution often skewed towards polluting modes of transport, is accompanied by high negative externality. In line with European Union directives in terms of a policy of sustainable mobility, many municipal administrations have hence developed transport solutions aiming at reducing the amount of private vehicles in circulation, and encouraging forms of "alternative mobility", such as public transport or shared private transport. In the promotion of transit, the main aspects generally taken into account are performances, quality of service, energy efficiency, and reduction of operational differences with private vehicles (usually called “discontinuities”). The latter is the principle inspiring the collective transport systems generally referred to as “innovative”, based on high level of automation, modern technological features, high performance and care for environmental sustainability. This paper analyses some representative innovative automatic transport systems (Accelerating Moving Walkways, Personal Rapid Transit, Automated People Mover) showing the potential consequences of their implementation as far as performance, energy efficiency and externality reduction.
