The monumental bilingual inscription of the Temple of Augustus and Rome in Ankara is not only the 'Queen of epigraphs', as Mommsen said, but it is an actual text of real historical, political and literary value: a testament that means to stand simultaneously as a memorial legacy and as a manifesto of the Augustan policy. The hypothesis of this work is that the Greek text, and not only the generally acknowledged Latin one, had been compiled under the direct supervision of Augustus himself. This is not in fact, quite clearly, a simple verbum de verb translation, but an actual “transposition”, loaded with precise political intentions, which not only transfers the words and the thought of the princeps from one language to the other but also from one ideological system to another. The bilingual text of Res Gestae, as a whole, is not only a testamentary and memorial legacy but a “political manifesto”: two-version ideological manifesto that reports the particular awareness that Augustus had of the complex revolutionary crisis at hand.

Abstract
The bilingual text of Res Gestae, as a whole, is not only a testamentary and memorial legacy but a “political manifesto”: two-version ideological manifesto that reports the particular awareness that Augustus had of the complex revolutionary crisis at hand.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
