Abstract

In the world, the urban area continues to transform itself and is intolerant of any attempts of a precise definition. Consequently it is essential for institutions and citizens wonder about his multiple identities and functions. The book addresses some of the most important urban sociological theories with the intent to bring out the idea of the city implicit in all of them. The author highlights the most significant new interpretations of the various theories, stressing the importance and limitations that can be recognized in each approach. Starting from the idea more widespread and long-lived of the "city as an organism" - dating back to the research of Robert Park and the Chicago School of the twenties - analyzing the return of interest in studies of Max Weber and those of Henri Lefebvre and Marxist theories of urban, together with objections to these models, up to lead the impacts of postmodern theories and currents that arise in opposition to the ideas most successful.
