The essay analyses the cinematographic work of the artist Paolo Gioli, identifying a strong experimental nature. The archaeological character of his production, the aspects linked to anachronism, the intermediality of many of his works are observed by crossing different methodological horizons. In particular, the essay focuses on some of the artist's works, placing them within a tripartite hermeneutic horizon. These are three great idea-movements that involve the importance of early cinema - with acts that dynamize the pictorial aspect, and that complete the degrees of truthfulness of the photographic experience; the obsessional relationship with the reinvention of the device - with the modification of the camera, its use in a sort of machine primitivism; and, finally, Gioli's attraction to the initial idea of action as a palingenetic locus, capable of a constant rebirth and regeneration of the filmic experience.

Abstract

The essay is included in the monograph dedicated to the photographer and filmmaker Paolo Gioli, an active member of the Italian avant-garde of the 1970s: an overview of his work, with a dozen essays, an interview and the artist's writings. Paolo Gioli (1942, Sarzano di Rovigo – 2022, Lendinara) undertook a complex research project revolving around the genesis of imagery and the functioning of visual processes in the 1960s. He made his first film in 1969, while in his study of photography, he began with the pinhole technique, then that of the photo-finish and Polaroid emulsion lifted onto various supports. Since 1974 he has taken part in key experimental cinema events as well as major international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale. His works are to be found in the collections of many major European and US museums, including that of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Art Institute Chicago, MoMA New York, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome and Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea Cinisello Balsamo. - https://www.lespressesdureel.com/EN/ouvrage.php?id=7870&menu=0
