Analysis of the evolution of cultural landscape studies in order to demonstrate how also ordinary rural landscape have valuable resources for their regeneration and, at the same time, conservation. Iida Valley (Japan) still carries specific architecture and landscape elements developed in symbiosis with its territorial context which are worth to be taken in consideration and protected. The paper provides the theory and highlights the main issues in relation to Iida cultural landscape conservation.
