Shoah Memorial

The commemoration of stories through the utilization of space, as an instrument of remembrance, is a process that is conditional, and one that is based upon the account that is to be told and the raw material of the site. In such a context, the designer becomes the editor of the material: each idea, and subsequently each design idea, is reliant upon the development of an appropriate narrative and context. It is always a complex process, raising questions of whose narrative is being relayed and how is the story being told? It is also an approach that imparts huge symbolic meaning upon all of the aspects of the project. Every feature, from conceptualization to the particular choice of materials, is scrutinized for meaning, some of which may or may not have been intended. Therefore the designer becomes both the strategist and the manipulator of each element and material of the project, many of which will impart much more significance than its immediate appearance may imply.
