I saggi raccolti in questo volume vogliono esplorare la condizione di limite dell’architettura contemporanea. Le esplorazioni intorno al tema del limite si misurano talora con una dimensione tutta interna al corpo urbano, talaltra con il carattere sospeso di siti compresi tra la compattezza del tessuto edilizio consolidato dei nuclei storici e le disordinate estensioni periferiche, altre volte ancora con la condizione di aree del tutto esterne alle città. In tali differenti situazioni, i progetti, lo studio delle diverse fasi della loro elaborazione, l’analisi delle procedure che li hanno resi possibili, assumono il ruolo strumentale di campi di indagine utili a comprendere i limiti dell’architettura e i suoi margini di azione nel reale. Allo stesso tempo, essi aprono una riflessione sulle relazioni fra immaginario e immaginazione, sui paradigmi del desiderio e del desiderabile, sulla pertinenza delle tecniche e delle argomentazioni che possono consentire di riprendere una discussione, al di là dell’inventario dei casi, “scientifica”, intendendo con ciò i riferimenti a “una comunità che cerca” e alle sue convenzioni. The essays gathered in this volume seek to explore the condition of “limit” in contemporary architecture. Explorations of the theme of the “limit”, as the reader will be able to verify, are contrasted at times with a dimension embraced by the body of the city, at other times with the pending nature of sites lying between the compactness of the consolidated built fabric of historical nuclei and chaotic suburban sprawl, yet other times with the condition of areas lying outside the city. In such differing circumstances, the projects, the study of the various development phases, and analysis of the procedures that made them possible, take on the instrumental role of fields of investigation to help understand architecture's limits and its margins for action in real situations. At the same time, they also open up reflection on the relationships between image and imagination, the paradigms of desire and the desirable, and the pertinence of techniques and theories that can permit a return to a “scientific” discussion, beyond the inventory of single cases, with the meaning of references to “a community on a quest” and its conventions.
