The article questions the relationship between poetic text, gesture, image, and affect, starting with an example: a scene from Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata. The central question is to try to understand what passes between text and image in terms of passional construction. In what way does the gesture take on the burden of transporting affection? How, instead of limiting themselves to illustrating the text, do some paintings shift and enrich its meaning?

Abstract

The article questions the relationship between poetic text, gesture, image, and affect, starting with an example: a scene from Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata. The central question is to try to understand what passes between text and image in terms of passional construction. In what way does the gesture take on the burden of transporting affection? How, instead of limiting themselves to illustrating the text, do some paintings shift and enrich its meaning?
