Registrare la città. Il video d’osservazione come pratica di ricerca urbanistica tra racconti, tracce e metafore

La ricerca che segue nasce dal riconoscimento dello stretto legame che intercorre tra il modo di descrivere la città contemporanea, i suoi territori, e la maniera in cui essa si produce. La tesi si confronta con gli strumenti di analisi e descrizione attraverso l'esperienza diretta del territorio utilizzando il video. Per fare questo lo sguardo che osserva, si colloca in una posizione che va oltre la visione prospettica e oltre lo sguardo zenitale, calandosi “tra” le cose, nella città, nei suoi spazi e nelle pratiche degli abitanti e interpretare un territorio abitato, quello attuale, che appare senza forma e irri‐conoscibile. Ricognizione. In prima istanza la tesi fa una ricognizione metodologica degli approcci attraverso linguaggi di ricerca sensibili che guardano ai luoghi e ai loro abitanti; con un approccio multidisciplinare che considera la complessità dell'oggetto d'osservazione, e con un metodo indiziario che supporta il lavoro d'indagine sul campo. Una selezione di esperienze di ricerca orientate all’approfondimento di queste pratiche sono trattate e restituite in forma di resoconto. Un secondo passo ricognitivo, questa volta storico, posiziona la ricerca nella cornice disciplinare di esperienze pionieristiche dell’America degli anni ‘70 e dell’Europa degli ultimi vent’anni. Esplorazione. La ricerca si focalizza poi nella costruzione di un regesto di pratiche di ricerca attraverso il video, mettendone in evidenza le azioni di indagine e le forme che esse assumono ‐il video d’osservazione, il video partecipato, il video narrativo, il video autoregistrato e online‐ e in funzione degli oggetti d’osservazione–lo spazio, con le sue metafore e le sue trasformazioni, le pratiche dello spazio ed i suoi immaginari, le storie dei suoi abitanti. Interpretazione. L’obiettivo è di esplicitare pratiche di ricerca e modalità descrittive che permettono l’interpretazione di spazi e fenomeni urbani che sfuggono ad altre forme di descrizione urbana come le mappe, o i diagrammi. Inoltre concetti come prossimità, inbetween, ritmo, intensità, tempo (inteso come cambiamento), durata (inteso come funzionamento e uso), assenza, recentemente utilizzati da un approccio semiotico alla città per cercare di spiegare la città contemporanea in modo testuale sono resi “evidenti” e si caricano di ulteriore significato attraverso la descrizione in video. In conclusione, il tentativo è di produrre un atlante di esperienze di ricerca visuali in urbanistica che integra l'attenzione allo spazio urbano a quella per le persone, i loro usi e immaginari della città, in cui vi è una convergenza della componente percettiva e di quella di ricerca analitica basate sull’osservazione empirica. (*) In questa sede il termine video è il prodotto dell’azione del filmare, l’atto di riprendere con la videocamera, e si associa alla pratica di osservazione diretta dei fenomeni urbani.

The research springs from an awareness of the close connection between how the contemporary city and its territories is described and the way in which it is produced. The thesis evaluates analytical and descriptive tools through the direct experience of the area and the use of video. In order to do this, the observational eye is placed in a position that goes beyond the perspective and zenithal view, alighting “amongst” things in the city, in its spaces and in the customs of its inhabitants, interpreting an inhabited territory, the current one, which seems shapeless and unrecognisable. Identification. Firstly, the thesis makes a methodological identification of the approaches through sensitive research languages which focus on the places and their inhabitants using a multidisciplinary approach which takes into consideration the complexity of the subject under observation, and with a circumstantial (prima facie) method which supports the investigative work in the field. A selection of research experiences oriented towards the in‐depth analysis of these practices was considered and submitted in the shape of a summary. A second exploratory step, this time a historical one, places the research within the disciplinary frame of the pioneering experiences of the USA in the 1970s and Europe over the last twenty years. Exploration. Secondly, the research focalises on creating an outline of video research practices, highlighting the investigative actions and the forms they take – the observational video, the collective video, the narrative video, the self‐recorded and online video – and depending on the objects observed – the space, with its metaphors and transformations, the usages of the space, the imaginaries it conveys and the stories of its inhabitants. Interpretation. The objective is that of revealing research practices and descriptive means which permit the interpretation of urban spaces and phenomena that elude other forms of urban description such as maps or diagrams. Furthermore, concepts such as proximity, in‐between, rhythm, intensity, time (in the sense of change), duration (in the sense of function and use) and absence, recently used in a semiotic approach to the city in an attempt to explain the contemporary city in a textual way, are made “clear” and are full of ulterior meaning thanks to the video description. In conclusion, the aim is to produce an atlas of visual urban planning research experiences, which incorporates attention to the urban space to attention to the people and the way they use and perceive the city, in which there is a convergence of the perceptive and the analytical research components based on empirical observation. (*) In this case, the term video is the product of the act or action of filming and it is linked to the practice of direct observation and the description of urban phenomena.
