This research begins with a critical observation of the creative and productive scenario between art and design, technology, science and digital culture from the second half of the nineties to the early twenties of the new millennium. Defined with the term New Media Art, Media Art, Digital Art depending on the case (Paul, Grau, Shanken, Hope, Daniels, Frieling, Mancuso), it has been taking shape as an interdisciplinary field articulated through different expressive canons and different returns, that precisely in the research on the body seems to have always sought and recently found a common experimentation ground. In the last ten years in particular, there has been a growing interest in updating the research started by the avant-garde of the twentieth century in the fields of design and art, to study new ways of dialogue of our bodies (soma, sensory apparatus, brain) expanded by technological and scientific research, with the context in which they are immersed: nature (other species and phenomena), objects (organic and inorganic) and other human beings. Research centers, media labs, citizen labs, cultural institutions, training centers and companies have begun to define the contours of an interdisciplinary study and production scenario that increasingly involves the soma-oikos relationship in its practices. If on the one hand technological innovation and scientific research feed a process of approach and penetration of our biology that now seems unstoppable, on the other hand a growing production is focusing on specific areas that highlight common characteristics and shared parameters in the design and formalization of a new human body in dialogue with its surroundings. Starting from this observation, we intend to bring out the evidence of a meeting point between art and design in research on the body, expanded at the level of the somatic, sensory and neural system, identifying a series of practices, aesthetics and common characteristics in the works of a group of selected case studies, which place the relationship between human being and context at the center of their practice, in the light of a series of philosophical-critical tools that emerge from the comparison between the main theories of posthuman thought. To this end, we want to identify a series of artists and designers active within the productive and cultural mechanism of New Media Art and Art Industries, who focus their research on the relationship between the human element and the non-human sphere. The analysis of their works allows us to observe, in the operation of experience through what is defined as an "expanded body", a subject-object of practice-reflection which itself breaks down the material-semiotic dualisms at the center of the thought core of this thesis. A territory that takes shape in the course of research and that requires the scholar to refine his tools of investigation, analysis and interpretation of the results, to model a critical tool that allows you to look at art and design starting from elements of integration of different academic domains and fields of study.
La presente ricerca prende abbrivio dall’osservazione critica dello scenario creativo e produttivo a cavallo tra arte e design, tecnologia, scienza e cultura digitale dalla seconda metà degli anni Novanta ai primi anni Venti del nuovo millennio. Definito con il termine New Media Art, Media Art, Digital Art a seconda dei casi (Paul, Grau, Shanken, Hope, Daniels, Frieling, Mancuso), si è andato configurando come un ambito interdisciplinare articolato attraverso diversi canoni espressivi e restituzioni differenti, che proprio nelle ricerche sul corpo sembra aver sempre cercato e recentemente trovato un terreno di sperimentazione comune. Negli ultimi dieci anni in particolare, si è osservato un crescente interesse ad attualizzare le ricerche avviate dalle avanguardie del Novecento nei campi del design e dell’arte, per studiare nuove modalità di dialogo dei nostri corpi (soma, apparato sensoriale, cervello) espansi dalla ricerca tecnologica e scientifica, con il contesto nel quale si trovano immersi: natura (altre specie e fenomeni), oggetti (organici e inorganici) e altri esseri umani. Centri di ricerca, media lab, citizen lab, istituzioni culturali, centri di formazione e aziende, hanno cominciato a definire i contorni di uno scenario di studio e produzione interdisciplinare che coinvolge sempre più il rapporto soma-oikos nelle sue pratiche. Se da un lato l’innovazione tecnologica e la ricerca scientifica alimentano un processo di avvicinamento e penetrazione della nostra biologia che sembra ormai inarrestabile, dall’altro una crescente produzione si sta focalizzando su specifici ambiti che evidenziano caratteristiche comuni e parametri condivisi nella progettazione e formalizzazione di un nuovo corpo umano in dialogo con ciò che lo circonda. A partire da questa osservazione, si intende fare emergere l’evidenza di un punto di incontro tra arte e design nelle ricerche sul corpo, espanso a livello di sistema somatico, sensoriale e neurale, individuando una serie di pratiche, estetiche e caratteristiche comuni nelle opere di un gruppo di case studies scelti, che pongono il rapporto tra essere umano e contesto al centro della loro pratica, alla luce di una serie di strumenti filosofico-critici che emergono dal confronto tra le principali teorie del pensiero postumano. A questo scopo, si vuole individuare una serie di artisti e designer attivi all’interno del meccanismo produttivo e culturale della New Media Art e delle Art Industries , che incentrano la loro ricerca sul rapporto tra elemento umano e ambito non-umano. L’analisi delle loro opere permette di osservare, nell’operatività dell’esperienza attraverso quello che è definito “corpo espanso”, un soggetto-oggetto di pratica-riflessione che abbatte esso stesso i dualismi material-semiotici al centro del nucleo di pensiero di questa tesi. Un territorio che prende forma nel corso della ricerca e che richiede allo studioso di affinare i propri strumenti di indagine, analisi e interpretazione dei risultati, per modellare uno strumento critico che consente di guardare all’arte e al design a partire da elementi di integrazione di diversi domini accademici e settori di studio.
