Abstract

The present study is designed by starting from a critical, objective observation of all those places at the margins and because they are at a limit, they hide a mysterious reality. These spaces are considered “space among things”, space that unites and at the same time divides and in the present scenario they escape from any definition although their existence is certain as well as the political-territorial importance. The time of partitioning, “matchings” “overlapping” exists. We could say then that “space among things”, borders generally turn out to be places where antinomies take on a concrete form that conquer space, takes on “just the right fit”, becoming characteristic places, peculiar binding places and at the same time elements of separation, closure and even openness toward the stranger. Therefore, drawing the line is an act of duty to confront and as a social need to guarantee a certain recognition to the people and territorial identity. On the other hand, crossing the border does not imply elimination of it but rather its momentary transformation in open space, used, organized and abandoned. Living the “space in the middle” means, living and building a third place whose center is within, where everything is confused, mixed, where it is difficult to distinguish what belongs on one side and what belongs to the other. Ultimately, among the wide cracks of the violated border a “No Man’s land”, a “Wild land” takes place, where rules, norms do not have any power and everything is confused, mixed in a suspended, unusual condition, in a sort of returning to an “initial chaos”, to a primitive state where there are no measures. The hypothesis then, is space redefinition, another form or better yet, abandoning the common idea of barrier, the possibility to plan a flexible system, absolutely changeable and dynamic, a “filter space”, temporary, not continuous and fragmented within. So, the Land of the border becomes the Land where time dilates, where everything becomes confused, where you are suspended in another dimension that ends up being a “ridiculous passageway”, where “misunderstanding” dwells undisputed and very little is needed to have a conflict explode. In any case, the chaos which reigns becomes the first reason, the essential peculiarity from which to begin again and from which another reality can be foreseen and as Claudio Magris used to say «if necessary, to camp out or settle down without fear in the no man’s land between two barriers, that maybe it is the promised land or at least the desert to reach it».
