This work presents an analysis of the vital reality of images in the light of the notion of the imaginal in Gilbert Simondon and Henry Corbin. The concept of the imaginal world (mundus imaginalis), pivotal to the recognition of the reality of the image via the thinking of mystical visions and prophecies, and to the attribution of a gnoseological function to the imagination, is forged in Corbin’s research, from his study of Islamic metaphysics, in order to name a degree of being intermediate between the sensible and the intelligible worlds, and operates as a mediator between them. We show that a distinct notion of the imaginal appears within the philosophy of individuation developed by Simondon, charged with a biological meaning anchoring it in a philosophy of life. Following the crystallization of the terminology of the imaginal world in Corbin, it can be seen that the imaginal is repurposed, in Simondon, towards a thought of the image, which he understands according to an analogy with the ontogenesis of the living. We show that Simondon’s reflection on the cell potency of imaginal discs governing the process of metamorphosis, informed by his relational ontology, makes it possible to conceptually specify the notion of agency as applied to the image, and go beyond the analogy with the living in order to think of the image as a vital function.

Ce travail présente une analyse de la réalité vitale de l’image à la lumière de la notion d’imaginal chez Gilbert Simondon et Henry Corbin. Le concept de monde imaginal (mundus imaginalis), qui a pour fonction la reconnaissance de la réalité de l’image à travers la pensée des visions mystiques et des prophéties, et l’attribution d’une fonction gnoséologique à l’imagination, est issu des recherches de Corbin, qui le forge à partir de son étude des métaphysiques islamiques, pour nommer un degré de l’être intermédiaire entre le sensible et l’intelligible, médiateur entre ceux-ci. Nous montrons qu’une notion distincte d’imaginal apparaît dans la philosophie de l’individuation développée par Simondon, chargée d’un ancrage biologique dans la pensée du vivant. À la suite de la cristallisation de la terminologie du monde imaginal chez Corbin, on observe que l’imaginal se transfère, chez Simondon, vers la pensée de l’image, pour être entendu selon une analogie ontogénétique avec le vivant. Nous montrons qu’une réflexion sur la potentialité cellulaire des disques imaginaux gouvernant le processus de métamorphose, informée par l’ontologie de la relation simondonienne, permet de formuler de manière précise le sens de l’agentivité des images, et de dépasser le modèle du vivant pour penser l’image comme une fonction proprement vitale.
