'A Magazine', 'Dutch', 'joe’s', 'Purple', 'Self Service', Six' and 'Visionaire' are some of the magazines on which the book focuses in order to investigate the functioning of niche periodicals founded by groups of people who have cultivated a collaborative dimension and chosen to carry out experiments in the two-dimensional space of the page. Magazines seen as places of inquiry, means for presenting the discourse of fashion and nurturing it through the languages of art direction, graphic design, photography and styling. Deeply rooted in the 1990s, they link the culture and system of fashion with artistic practices, shining a spotlight on the work of hitherto unknown authors. The book has a high level of originality due to the lack of attention, in the field of fashion and design studies in Italy, towards niche magazines and more generally towards fashion periodical publishing. Methodologically, the book makes use of in-depth historiographic research carried out on fashion magazines, with particular attention to the languages of graphic design, art direction, and photography. The research also highlights the importance of the doctoral theses of seminal authors such as Algirdas Julien Greimas and Roland Barthes. The impact is international as it is the English edition of the book ‘Editoria come curatela: progetto e immaginario nelle riviste di moda contemporanee’ (Marsilio, 2020), with an afterword by Professor Judith Clark (London College of Fashion, UAL University of the Arts London).
