L'architettura dialettica di Oswald Mathias Ungers. Architettura e composizione urbana per il centro di Berlino

The thesis investigates some works by the German architect Oswald Mathias Ungers, in particular those relating to the season of his work of the "dialectic city", confronting a specific case study: Berlin. Assuming this particular season of Ungers' work allows us to analyze the architectural and urban project through the lens of the transformation and construction of the contemporary city, the "Großstadt", with its criticalities and with the historical baggage with which the cities, in the specific case the European one, are forced to confront, and in the case of Berlin also with its post-war condition. The analyzed projects are read from a compositional and figurative point of view, trying to bring out the references, the aporias, the conditions, the rules and their alterations, which the architect builds in the conceptual and expressive phase of his work. What emerges is a polyhedronally complex figure that hides the traces of a long and profound reflection on the meaning of the city, on the construction of space, and on the understanding of the project of architecture again as "Baukunst", as the art of building the city where human life takes place.

La tesi indaga alcune opere dell'architetto tedesco Oswald Mathias Ungers, in particolare quelle afferenti alla stagione del suo lavoro che confluiscono nella tesi della "città dialettica", confrontandosi con uno specifico caso studio: Berlino. Assumere questa particolare stagione dell'opera di Ungers permette di analizzare il progetto architettonico e urbano attraverso la lente della trasformazione e costruzione della città contemporanea, la "Großstadt ", con le sue criticità e con il bagaglio storico con cui le città, nel caso specifico quella europea, sono costrette a confrontarsi, e nel caso di Berlino anche con la sua condizione post-bellica. I progetti analizzati sono letti da un punto di vista compositivo e figurativo, cercando di far emergere i riferimenti, le aporie, le condizioni, le regole e le sue alterazioni, che l'architetto costruisce nella fase ideativa ed espressiva del suo lavoro. Ciò che emerge è una figura poliedricamente complessa, che sotto la maglia di un rigore assoluto, puro, quasi "indicibile", nasconde le tracce di una lunga e profonda riflessione sul senso della città, sulla costruzione dello spazio, e sull'intendere il progetto di architettura ancora come "Baukunst", come arte di costruire la città dove si svolge la vita dell'uomo.
