Scrapscapes of Resistance offers a critical analysis of the Cadernos de referências by Brazilian artist Hudinilson Jr. (1957-2013), a series of approximately 130 notebooks compiled daily over more than 30 years (circa 1981-2013) using scissors and glue. Interpreted through the lens of scrapbooking—a 19th-century practice of appropriating and organizing paper clippings and other ephemera on editorial media—the transgressive narrative flows of the Cadernos emerge as a realm of design, culture, and media resistance. The dissertation fills a gap in the comprehensive understanding of the nuanced implications embodied in the Cadernos. It delves into the material, processual, spatial, and thematic dimensions, decoding symbolic references such as the pervasive influence of the mythological figure of Narcissus on layout solutions and poetics. Additionally, it underscores the significance of collage technique, synaesthetic engagement, and strategic notions such as “amateur professionalism,” “dis-production,” and “self-design.” Expanding further, the analysis ventures into the socio-cultural milieu, examining Latin American influences and concurrent Brazilian cultural experiences resonant with Hudinilson Jr.’s techniques and sensibilities. This investigation identifies two key concepts, interversão and sacanagem, situating them culturally within the postmodernist zeitgeist. From this positioning emerges the notion of “scrapscape,” a neologism describing the dynamic and expanding universe of scraps and ephemera produced by the global mass media consumerism machine that Hudinilson Jr. absorbs, organizes, and resemantizes within the Cadernos’ double-page spreads. Leveraging the trans-geographical, -temporal, and -cultural nature of the scrapscape notion, the analysis outlines a mapping of scrapbooking in contemporary art publishing, revealing a renewed and multifaceted interest. It identifies publications arranging analogous scrapscapes within this context, unveiling recurrences such as the widespread use of scrapbooking as a tool for cultural, sexual, and political emancipation. Scrapscapes of Resistance navigates undisciplined themes and objects, bringing together various notions, disciplines, and perspectives. It rehabilitates scrapbooking as a practice of resistance and a generative tool within the realm of communication design and material and visual culture. It also offers a transversal reinterpretation of Hudinilson Jr.’s compilative practice, highlighting its potential, reverberations, peculiarities, and drifts. Ultimately, it unveils the subversive value of the Cadernos de referências, framing them as devices that challenge authorial stances and design orthodoxies, capable of questioning established notions of body, identity, and desire.

Scrapscapes of Resistance naviga temi e oggetti indisciplinati, ponendo in dialogo diverse nozioni, saperi e discipline.
