Abstract

Looking at a number of case studies that encompass Flash Art, Frieze, and Gagosian Quarterly, as well as the magazine of La Biennale di Venezia and the documenta magazines (1997-2017) the paper aims to analyse the role of the art magazine within the contemporary art system. It shows the many ways through which the magazine has expanded its scope, from vehicle to promote and disseminate local and international critical dialogue, to a means indispensable for the process of artistic and institutional legitimation, and for the market.
