Abstract: According to the declared adherence to European and international goals on knowledge sharing and academic research as a public good, the project of Bembo Officina Editoriale adopt the Open Access model, an anything but secondary choice, which required the development of a web application aimed both at easing authors in disseminating their publications in a simple and transparent manner, and at allowing the editorial committee to dynamically manage and organize content while also providing technical support in the use of the automatic layout system that is the most important feature of the system. In light of the project's objectives, the creation of the “bemboedizioni.it” web application, the interaction design aspect probably required most of the efforts. For this type of project, a key international reference is undoubtedly the well-known Norman-Nielsen group , which has been studying aspects related to the user-computer relationship for decades, providing a wide literature on the subject. Since 2000, in addition to the main founders of the group, Donald Norman and Jakob Nielsen, the company has involved Bruce Tognazzini , also a renowned expert in interface design and usability. His professional background includes contributions to the most important IT companies in the world such as Apple Computer, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, Adobe, Hewlett-Packard, General Electric, and others. In this scenario, among Tognazzini's work, an open document entitled “First Principles of Interaction Design” is of particular interest. With this document, he defines a series of design and testing rules to support the creation of user interfaces. To better understand the design of the interaction and usability aspects of the bemboedizioni.it application, it is useful to analyze the design choices made, following -point by point- the topics covered in this document.
