Abstract

Pantelleria island is shaped by wind and waves, by its geographical position and ancient history, reflecting in traditions what reinterpret constructive techniques searching for a multiple adaptation. Just the thinking of its gardens finds the exceptionality of the making what has deep roots, reacting to many difficulties and creating new models of sustainability at the same time. Here the continuity of an indissoluble relationship between artifice and nature is evident, as well as the ability to interpret environmental conditions for the definition of resilient architecture and settlements. In limiting, cultivating, inhabiting, we recognize the specificities of an island made by various depths, related to the being and the making, physical, historical and cultural depths that return the ability to withstand adversities by practicing an adaptation which conforms the built and cultivated landscape. The Hidden Depths workshop focuses on the prefiguration of some useful conditions for a sustainable redevelopment of the urban centre of Pantelleria, founding that on the interpretation of the island’s specific traditions in cultivating and building to inhabit a difficult and sometimes hostile place, conformed by the continuous limiting or indulging of environmental factors.
