“Archaeology’s places and contemporary uses” is an inter-faculty design workshop held in Venice for its first edition in 2009 from September 21st to October 3rd, as Intensive Programme of the Erasmus Lifelong Learning Programme 2009-2010. The intensive program, organized by University Iuav of Venice (project coordinator Prof. Margherita Vanore), was held in partnership with the Escola Tecnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona (University Politecnica de Catalunya - Prof. Pilar Cos i Riera), the Manchester School of Architecture (Manchester Metropolitan University - Prof. Sally Stone) and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Catania (Degree Course in Enhancement of the Archaeological Heritage - Prof. Pietro Maria Militello). Subject of study was the design of small architectures in archaeological sites, for the protection of ruins and the enhancement of the place. The priority given to the needs of conservation, protection and development was closely related to the need for a project to research the adequate architecture in order to describe both the areas of excavation, their urban surroundings and the landscape, using innovative technologies supported by a communication project that will include contemporary architecture inside as at the edges of the archaeological sites. The workshop followed a schedule of coordinated actions: multi-disciplinary lectures, visits of places, design work, critics, models, jury, touring exhibition. This intensive formative experience between architecture and archaeology shows how much the integration of disciplines, schools and cultures, can improve the project for the places of our cultural heritage.
