Emilio Marcucci (1837-1890) was an architect, archaeologist, and botanist who, from 1875 until 1887, worked as Royal Inspector in the Ufficio degli Scavi di Antichità e dei Monumenti connected to restorations of monuments in and around Arezzo and Florence. In particular, he participated in many competitions for the restoration of facades of Mediaeval an Renaissance churches in Florence, Bologna, and Savona. Marcucci’s photographic archive, which was essential for carrying out his professional duties, ended up in Bernard Berenson’s Villa I Tatti in Florence as part of the library of the architectural historian Roberto Papini (1883-1957). His method of re-inventing the past was based on the use of photographs as a notebook, cutting, pasting and adding watercolor to achieve a complete reconstruction of a particular structure from fragments.
