The gap between infrastructure projects and landscape design, between engineering works and quality of urban space, is a fact. There are several causes for this poor integration, including the indifference of the space of mobility towards nature and the stratification of places; the figurative poverty of many design solutions; the concept of transport space as a strictly mono-functional element that does not generally integrate an array of uses and activities, as a purely technical solution for shaping the city which is hardly ever designed as an element to regenerate the landscape, but exclusively as a place through which to move. The theme of including linear infrastructure in the landscape is developed in the text by examining several experiences, completed or in progress, extreme case studies chosen for their symbolism and their specific context. The purpose is to assess the application of innovative architectural designs and new planning proposals in areas that, despite their problematic lack of infrastructure and their need for a functional reorganization, appear to be highly stratified places with significant value and identity. The aim is to highlight the complexity of the search for design solutions for infrastructure that must take into account very different situations and contexts, in which it is important to reconcile technical and constructive solutions with the historical and/or morphological singularity, or infrastructure that can represent and express the context by enhancing the landscape or infrastructure in which the dominant issue is perception, the dynamic component or the dimension of time.
