Abstract

The following notes use some paradoxes to highlight how road transport presents intrinsic elements of insecurity that controlled density systems have ruled out since the mid-nineteenth century. I am aware that a car of today has rules of circulation that are the same as a horse carriage two centuries ago can be a source of perplexity. But we must not let ourselves be deceived by the different technologies. In both cases, the safety is entirely entrusted to the driver's behavior. As a first consequence, I can only say that road traffic management alone cannot solve the safety problems (both passenger and pedestrian). An integrated approach as defined in the contents of the Sustainable Mobility Plans set out by the European Union is needed [1]. The notes add some economic considerations. Road transport requires considerable resources paid by families. An integrated, collective, sustainable system would free up huge resources for other needs of the community.
