The relationship between climate and architecture is addressed in order to define how far the character of the building - that is the set of functional, formal and technological characteristics - is linked to the place and culture, and to discuss how far the local climate affects this character. In order to develop an evaluation methodology for the intervention phase, questions about the adaptability/transformability of the historical architectures in case of climate-factor change, are therefore raised. Adaptation may define both the intrinsic capacity of an organism and the potential result of forecasting, that is a requirement of the project. In the same manner, the study of architectural adaptations to climate can act as a design tool, contrasting or at least balancing the application of undifferentiated and standardised solutions. Hence, the analysis of architectural characteristics (or “temperament”, to quote Viollet-le-Duc) is crucial in establishing aspects of resilience as well as in delineating a maximum degree of transformability preserving the character of invariance in each architecture.
