This paper deals with the relationship between the planning process and the archaeological patrimony on a large scale, in the light of regional legislation and modifications to the statutes of the Soprintendenza dei Beni Culturali e Paesaggio. There are presented some of the experiments in the Veneto region of Wladimir Dorico, and the recent methods adopted in the planning acts in Puglia and Tuscany. In conclusion, there are presented some of the problematic issues of an institutional and methodological nature, on the role of archaeological evaluation on a wider scale in the planning process.
