Venice and Amsterdam have in common strong relationship between buildings and water. this paper focuses on the timber pile fondations of Venice and Amsterdam (or rather the Netherlands), their characteristics, the consequences of pile decay for the stability of the buildings, and the approach to investigation and restoration. Differences or similarities are pointed out in order to achieve a better understanding of the problems and to lay the basis for planning further research and developing a common protocol.
