Domestic Romance. verso possibilità abitative imparando da case narrate

This thesis stems from a return and a beginning. After years in which the profession of architect took me far from my homeland, I returned with eyes hybridized by an outsider’s gaze, with which I was determined to seek, through a doctoral thesis, a sort of Italianness in the architecture, particularly in the architecture of the house, in domestic architecture. The idea behind this thesis was to try, starting from a fertile and precise starting point, to produce new and stimulating paths and future research paths that can suggest tangible results in the contemporary world and in the years to come regarding the architectural discipline. The result is a heterogeneous research, perhaps unconventional, intentionally with open conclusions: a research that does not describe rules but possibilities, which leaves room for new questions and hypotheses, which welcomes contradictions, which believes in the intellectual fertility of questions rather than answers. At the heart of this research is the house, the domestic space, domesticity. In these years sadly characterized by a pandemic with unprecedented social implications, this theme has taken on an even more significant value, which has opened up urgent rethinks in which this thesis wants to participate. Today the house cannot be what it was yesterday and it is not what it will be tomorrow. The houses that became the heart of the research were narrated on Domus. Houses narrated and not built, and precisely for this reason free from clientele, budgets, academics, rules, laws and market logic. They dialogue with the contemporaneity of those years but also with a timeless domesticity, or better domesticity of all times. Houses that celebrate the pride of modesty, which arise from what is found on the site: a topic that is more relevant than ever and which, given the current state of the planet, will increasingly characterize the architectural discourse of this 21st century. To describe these houses in an extreme synthesis, in addition to the term “domestic”, it was combined the word “romance”, which comes from the old French romance and means “narrative in verse”, or even “vulgar language”, “vernacular language”. “Romance”, together with “Domestic”, effectively express, despite their different shades of meaning, spontaneity and narrative, freedom from academia and the market. Fruit of the cohesion between genius loci and human being. Like the architectures taken into consideration in this research and like the ones I love to imagine.

Questa tesi nasce da un ritorno e da un inizio. Dopo anni in cui la professione di architetto mi ha portato lontano dalla mia terra natale, sono tornato con occhi ibridati da uno sguardo da outsider, con il quale ero determinato a ricercare, attraverso una tesi di dottorato, una sorta di italianità nell'architettura, in particolare nell'architettura della casa, nell'architettura domestica. L'idea alla base di questa tesi è stata quella di cercare, partendo da un punto di partenza fertile e preciso, di produrre nuovi e stimolanti futuri percorsi di ricerca, che potessero suggerire risultati tangibili nel mondo contemporaneo e negli anni a venire per quanto riguarda la disciplina architettonica. Il risultato è una ricerca eterogenea, forse non convenzionale, con conclusioni volutamente aperte: una ricerca che non descrive regole ma possibilità, che lascia spazio a nuove domande e ipotesi, che accoglie contraddizioni, che crede nella fertilità intellettuale delle domande piuttosto che delle risposte. Al centro di questa ricerca c'è la casa, lo spazio domestico: la domesticità. In questi anni tristemente caratterizzati da una pandemia con risvolti sociali senza precedenti, questo tema ha assunto un valore ancora più significativo, che ha aperto ripensamenti urgenti a cui questa tesi vuole partecipare. Oggi la casa non può essere quella che era ieri e non è quella che sarà domani. Su Domus sono state narrate le case che sono poi diventate il cuore della ricerca. Case narrate e non costruite, e proprio per questo libere da clientela, budget, vincoli accademici, regole, leggi e logiche di mercato. Dialogano con la contemporaneità di quegli anni ma anche con una domesticità senza tempo, o meglio una domesticità di tutti i tempi. Case che celebrano l'orgoglio della modestia, che nascono da quanto si trova nel sito: un tema più che mai attuale e che, dato lo stato del nostro pianeta, caratterizzerà sempre di più il discorso architettonico di questo XXI secolo. Per descrivere queste case in una sintesi estrema, oltre al termine “domestic”, è stata abbinata la parola “romance”, che deriva dall'antico romance francese e significa “narrativa in versi”, o anche “linguaggio volgare”, “lingua vernacolare”. “Romance”, insieme a “Domestic”, esprimono efficacemente, nonostante le loro diverse sfumature di significato, spontaneità e narrativa, libertà dal mondo accademico e dal mercato. Frutto della coesione tra genius loci ed essere umano. Come le architetture prese in considerazione in questa ricerca e come quelle che amo immaginare.
