The SuDS-Sustainable Drainage Systems control the run-off rates through natural components and the imitation of the natural soil functions. They are several technologies, most of them vegetated, able to retain, to detain, to infiltrate, to filtrate rain water. They help the traditional urban drainage systems to appropriately work, avoiding flood risks. Moreover, SuDS are very efficient in providing multiply benefits like purifying the water resource, to reduce the UHI-Urban Heat Island, to provide a suitable base for biodiversity, to improve the amenity of the urbanscape, all of them essential for reaching the goals of contemporary urban regeneration according to EC policies. This paper illustrates the main features of the SuDS, explaining their functions and benefits, introducing the innovative design principles that are at the base of their successful application.
