Since the beginning of the 20th century, the enthusiasm for reinforced concrete also involves the disciplinary field of restoration without adequate preliminary test on its durability. However, a significant issue arises concerning the preservation of contemporary architectures and when concrete is used on ancient building materials. Reinforced concrete has a shorter lifespan and thus potentially causing a swift deterioration of these retrofit, and also causes a risk to the original part to which is connected. The case study analysis of Ferdinando Forlati’s restoration highlights the complexity which characterizes this technical innovation within its historical context: the newly formed Italian nation. Primarily the conflict between the two pillars of the constructing field: engineering and architecture. Subsequently the regulations, skills and institutions governing the restauration site would also affect the work of Ferdinando Forlati as engineer and supervisor.
