In his text devoted to the relationship between artwork and testimony, Franco Rella investigates the ways in which art can bear witness to the extreme horizons of experience and history. The paper traces his arguments, with particular reference to two aspects: the plural horizons of testimony and the consequent critique of any “false totality” and production of coherence; the exploration of testimonial power at the very heart of artworks through their immanent production of sense, against any resignation to the idea of a radical “unrepresentability”.

Abstract

In his text devoted to the relationship between artwork and testimony, Franco Rella investigates the ways in which art can bear witness to the extreme horizons of experience and history. The paper traces his arguments, with particular reference to two aspects: the plural horizons of testimony and the consequent critique of any “false totality” and production of coherence; the exploration of testimonial power at the very heart of artworks through their immanent production of sense, against any resignation to the idea of a radical “unrepresentability”.
