Virtual 3D environments have become an essential tool for the appreciation of long-lost architectural heritage, opening new avenues in the fields of preservation and accessibility of historical assets. Thanks to the current digital reconstruction technologies, which not only restore the physicality and aesthetics of lost spaces but also reposition their significance within their original historical and cultural context, it is possible to revive buildings and monumental complexes destroyed by time or events. This offers an experience that goes beyond mere visual reproduction, engaging the visitor in an immersive and interactive exploration. Such an experience cannot overlook the design of the auditory space and the sonic interaction within it, requiring a faithful and personalized simulation of the 3D virtual environment as perceived by the user. This essay aims to discuss the contribution of the Horizon 2020 project IT’S A DIVE (Individual Three-Dimensional Spatial Auditory Displays for Immersive Virtual Environments) in this domain, through the development of an innovative methodology for 3D audio personalization that combines traditional signal processing techniques, physics-inspired sound propagation models, and cutting-edge deep learning algorithms.
