Among the urban settlements built depending on specific production cycles, there is a little-known episode and almost ignored by urban historiography, despite it investigated for years the Italian industrial cities between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. The city in question is Colleferro, which is located in the province of Rome, about 50 kilometers from it, along the Rome-Naples highway. Colleferro, unlike other established towns, was built in function of a factory and has preserved this feature over time: the foundation and subsequent extensions have always occurred according to the role of factory-city and worker city. Its economic structure is still based on industrial production: there are several factories, some of them particularly significant, which make it a pole of reference for the surrounding territory. Colleferro, which has 21,000 inhabitants today, has been declared City of Culture of the Lazio Region 2018. This paper aims to highlight the birth of Colleferro and its transformations in the twentieth century.
