Abstract

Computation can be considered a fundamental dimension of design, together with other elements like materials, colour, sound, form and function. Positioned between acoustics, computer science and design, sonic interaction design is about shaping the sonic behaviour of artefacts, by design- ing relevant sonic interactions. In the light of Research through Design (RtD) method of inquiry, recently emerged in HCI, we tackled the design problem of distributing short sequences of sounds in space as well in time, by exploring a non-visual illusion called auditory saltation effect. Spatially distributing auditory displays can be important for many applications, including the signaling of hidden hot spots.
