This paper investigates Leonardo Benevolo’s contribution to the field of architectural and urban history through a critical review of his thinking, focusing on some of his works. The interest in researching Benevolo stems from the need to analyse the profound and unique biographical profile of this architect, urban planner and historian, given that his cultural impact does not seem to have been fully recognised internationally due to the absence of detailed studies that clearly explain how his thinking has been understood in other countries. Although Italian academics recognise his contribution to the formation of an architectural and urban planning culture based on knowledge of their historical roots and evolution over time, this work proposes to address the theoretical debate at an international level through various monographs. Although Italian academics recognise his contribution to the formation of an architectural and urban culture based on knowledge of its historical roots and evolution over time, this work proposes to address the theoretical debate at an international level through various monographs. To this end, this research reviews the published critiques of four of his most notable works (Storia dell’architettura moderna, Le origini dell’urbanistica moderna, Storia della città, and La città nella storia d’Europa), paying particular attention to how his legacy has been received by critics internationally. The methodology adopted, carried out through research in various databases, leads to an understanding of the reasons underlying the negative opinions that, according to international intellectuals, especially Anglo-Saxons, characterise Benevolo’s thinking.
