The road transport costs in Italy, in the year 2007, are been about 400 billion Euros (160 cars, 10 motor cycles, 130 trucking freight). The GPD reached 1450 billion Euros. Then the transport sector contributes to the 25% of GPD(and about 20% of the State revenue). The railway sector, in the same year, required 10 billion Euros (4 billion traffic revenue and 6 million public contribution in different forms, with a financial loss of 415 million Euros). This paper summarized the results of the research work of the "Transport, Territory and Logistics Unit of University IUAV of Venice" and put the attention on the high amount of the monetary resources used by the Italian community for road transport, in comparison with other transports sectors but also with the total social requirements. The question put to the attention of the reader is if this is the best possible scenario or if is possible to imagine a new (long term) wished scenario, in which the total resources of the Italian community (but the problem is the same in all advanced nations) could be used in more equilibrated forms, assigning to the various aspects of the quality of life and not in priority way to road transport.
