Since the post-war period, the theme of urban reconstruction following wars, disasters or social conflicts has been tackled with radically different strategies in terms of conservation or innovation of urban fabrics, adopting different technical and design tools and various strategic visions. Despite the large number of case studies, an organised system for the analyses of reconstruction processes has never been fully developed. There is still no comprehensive investigation capable of evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Individual exemplary cases have been analysed in depth within different emerging issues (geographic areas, political conditions, urban theories, etc.), but a comparative study based on coherent parameters has yet to be developed. The article aims to establish an analytical drawing system for the understanding of urban metamorphosis following large-scale destructions.
