This article explores Venice as a historical paradigm of proactive urban design. Confronting a highly unstable and inhospitable natural environment, Venice developed a unique system of architectural and infrastructural strategies that ensured both survival and the emergence of enduring beauty. These strategies – including timber pile foundations, rainwater harvesting systems, and flexible structural schemes – anticipate contemporary concerns of environmental adaptation, resilience, and sustainability. The study proposes that Venice represents not only a legacy of historical ingenuity but also a model for the cities of the future.

Abstract
This article explores Venice as a historical paradigm of proactive urban design. Confronting a highly unstable and inhospitable natural environment, Venice developed a unique system of architectural and infrastructural strategies that ensured both survival and the emergence of enduring beauty. These strategies – including timber pile foundations, rainwater harvesting systems, and flexible structural schemes – anticipate contemporary concerns of environmental adaptation, resilience, and sustainability. The study proposes that Venice represents not only a legacy of historical ingenuity but also a model for the cities of the future.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
